This is a completely rebuilt, polished and milled 1500 cylinder head applicable to carbureted SOHC engines with a 10-bolt, 12mm stud engine block, as fitted to 1979-80 Fiat X19 and Strada. Not applicable to 1981-88 engine blocks with 10mm fasteners. Be sure to check out the multiple pictures!
This head has larger runners, larger exhaust valves, and a better-shaped combustion chamber than 1300 or Yugo heads. When milled flat it increases compression to the level that a 1300-series head can provide. Throw in a hot cam, and a good valve job, and this unit will really wake up the performance of your car.
We start with a very good condition 1500 carbureted head, with 12mm head bolt holes. All threads / stud holes are intact, and clean coolant passages absent of corrosion or enlarged openings. All spark plug and coolant sensor holes have clean threads, and we replace any valve guide whose measurements are out of spec.
This head is completely ported and polished, enlarging the intake and exhaust runners by 2mm and thoroughly cleaning out the valve pocket where flow is most restricted. We mill the head flat to completely remove the combustion chamber "ring", and also mill the cambox surface to ensure straightness and help prevent annoying cam-box oil leaks. Note: Milling the head by this amount WILL affect cam timing. The engine will run and start normally with stock gear, but for optimum performance an adjustable cam timing gear is recommended to synchronize cam and crank timing.
We tap and plug all emissions ports, and tap the intake manifold coolant holes with a 5/16 x 20 thread so that they can be easily blocked if desired. A trick three-angle valve cut on the seats which has been flowbench proven to increase flow by nearly 40%! New competition valve springs with stock retainers are used, which are guaranteed to put up with a high RPM beating up to 9K RPM without danger of valve float.
