This straight, original paint car has a clean bill of health from Midwest-Bayless.
This Bertone X1/9 was built in March, 1983. It features many improvements over the earlier FIAT version cars.
It has a 1500cc fuel injected SOHC engine with performance mods mated to a 5-Spd manual trans. It runs great, cold and hot starts well.
The car has a changed / modified instrument cluster, so original miles are unknown. Records indicate that it has seen about 5,000 miles of driving since 2018.
The chassis rides comfortably and firmly thanks to the large amount of care-taking and refurbishment work performed over the last 5 years.
You can spend an enormous amount of time and money refurbishing a lesser, rusted, worn out X1/9 to this level, or you can start enjoying this car right now.
Body and Exterior
The body is two tone "Rosso Arancio / Grigio Metallico" (tomato red / gunmetal gray).
This car has no corrosive rust to the unibody or crash damage. The main structural areas such as front shock towers, rear shock towers and floor pans are original and unrepaired. Fender arches and rocker panel areas are rust free.
Floorpans are original and rust free.
The car's finish has some blemishes and dings, but its overall exterior presentation is good, around 80 points.
It is worthy of a repaint and minor repairs to make it a show-level car.
The car has spots of surface rust that have been sealed, on the upper rear and front panels. No holes in these areas.
Spots of surface rust on the nose.
Minor spots on the engine cover.
Rear trunk cheeks are the only areas of the car with outright rust pin-holes.
This is the worst condition spot on the car, on the lower driver-side cheek, a typical area of oxidation.
The front air dam, front grille and all front / rear plastic bumper trims are intact. Original glass in all positions.
Engine, Fuel, Ignition, Exhaust and Cooling System
1500cc SOHC engine w/Bosch FI and Bosch electronic ignition
This car was mechanically refurbished by Midwest-Bayless in 2017 about 5,000 miles ago. New fuel, pump, filter, high and low pressure injection system supply fuel hoses, fuel tank, timing belt and V-belt.
The car's engine bay AC components have been changed to non-AC for simple maintenance.
The engine bay is clean with original, uncut wiring.
The cooling system has been completely refurbished with new hoses, aluminum radiator, and stainless expansion tank. Temps are rock solid.
Blower fan works, heater core transfers heat as expected.
It features a Midwest-Bayless performance cylinder head / camshaft assembly and a Midwest-Bayless Sport Exhaust with long-tube header and Borla muffler.
This car was rated 75HP at the flywheel as delivered new. Dyno sheets show 88HP at the wheels, which is about 100HP at the flywheel. This car scoots!
Electricals
All accessories and lights work. All cabin switches and gauges work as expected. This car was delivered clock delete.
Headlights have been converted to LED for superior brightness and low current consumption.
JVC stereo with simple two-speaker install in the rear parcel tray.
Battery, distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires replaced during original refurbishment.
Transmission / Clutch / Driveline
The 5-Spd manual transmission is in excellent condition, shifting correctly into all gears with no synchronizer issues, no grinding, reverse works as expected.
Hydraulics and clutch were replaced during original refurbishment.
Axle boots and CVs are good.
Steering / Suspension / Tires / Wheels / Brakes
KYB struts at all four corners. Front lowering springs to eliminate the factory "nose high" attitude. This car has a nice stance.
Control arm bushings and ball joints are in good condition with no issues. All wheel bearings are solid with no hum or play.
Braking system completely serviced during recent refurbishment, with new master cylinder, brake pads, flex hoses and rotors.
Steering system completely serviced during recent refurbishment, with new rack bushing, tie rod ends, radius rod bushings.
Car has been fitted with front and rear sway bars for excellent handling. The car tracks straight and handles nicely on the freeway and through curves.
Very good condition factory alloy CD-16 "Iron Cross" wheels and Hankook 175/70-13 tires.
Spare tire and wheel in good condition.
Interior / Top
This car features Bertone black-leather interior with black plush carpets. Starting in 1983, Bertone-produced cars had redesigned floorpans that allowed a seating position about 1.5" lower than earlier cars, giving extra headroom.
Dashboard, center console and firewall claddings are factory issue black. Dashboard is uncracked! The glove box door hinge needs repair.
The instrument cluster was replaced by previous owner with 140MPH unit, so mileage does not display actual miles as expected. A leather-wrapped steering wheel was a hallmark of the early Bertone cars.
The interior cushions are supple and all bolsters are properly tied. Door cards are matching the seats, in very good condition. Doors have working power window lifts. Carpet has good color and is untorn.
Targa top is in good shape with black headliner. All weatherstrips are good.
Front /Rear Trunk
Factory mat and battery cover intact. Fluid reservoirs in excellent condition.
One look at the shock towers tell you everything you need to know about the overall rust-free condition of the car.
Rear trunk is presentable with original carpets, mats and blower.
Rear trunk pockets have minor corrosion in the bottoms. They look dirty and unkempt because they were coated with WaxOil rust proofing and will need some extra effort to clean up.
Factory trunk jack included.
