1980 Fiat X1/9 Triple Black - Fully Refurbished!
By Midwest-Bayless Italian Auto
6.22.25 - This car is sold.
Up for sale is a solid, well running fully refurbished 1980 Fiat X1/9 with lots of upgrades and all of the maintenances.
The Fiat X1/9 was introduced to North America in 1974 with a 1300cc engine and 4-Spd transaxle. In 1979, the car was redesigned as "Series 2" with an updated interior, 1500cc motor and 5-Spd transaxle. This is a Series 2, 49-state version carbureted 1980 car with 2-bbl Weber carb, in somewhat rare "triple black".

If you've been searching for a solid example of an X1/9 with high reliability and show-car looks, this one's for you!

This car is titled by a private owner and is an individual (not dealer) transaction. The car was built in 12/1979, making it a 1980 model year car. Midwest-Bayless has possession of the vehicle and can answer all questions regarding its condition and recent services.

Midwest-Bayless has performed a complete, engine-out mechanical refurbishment, including desmogging, new gaskets and seals, brake and clutch hydraulics, steering, suspension, fuel, cooling system, exhaust and electrical improvements. It is highly reliable and ready to drive anywhere.

The odometer shows a modest 58,000 miles.

The 1500cc carbureted engine runs great. It cold and hot starts just as expected with one try. The chassis rides comfortably.
Body and Exterior
The body is "Nero Metallico". It is black with yellow metallic, giving a charcoal gray appearance, with all original bumpers and trims.

This car has been repainted at least twice in previous years, with individually resprayed panels.
The passenger side door suffers from blemishes and a rough finish that can be noticed up-close, but from 5-feet, is relatively uniform to the rest of the car.

It has a few scratches and blemishes, but is overall solid and rust-free. It is remarkably ding-free, with sides and doors that are very straight.

It has an 80-85 point finish. The black and silver motif, highlighted by its iconic decal package and alloy wheels, makes it an eye catching car.

This car has a few very minor cosmetic flaws, but does not have any deep corrosive rust to the unibody or suspension pick-ups.

The main structural areas such as front and rear shock towers, rear cross members, and floor pans are excellent.

It is the kind of car you can daily drive, and not worry too badly about an errant grocery cart or the occasional drive in the rain.
Floorpans are solid. The driver side has been cleanly repaired. The passenger side has a bit of rust near the drain but is otherwise firm.

The rear trunk pockets have been previously repaired.

The car is solid and accurate enough to warrant the investment of professional repair to the minor cosmetic blemishes shown and repaint for a show level car.

The front air dam and grille are intact and in perfect condition.

The front and rear bumpers are in great shape with excellent upper bumper trims.

Original glass in all positions including windshield.
The doors, hood, engine cover and decklid are in great condition with no visible surface rust or repairs.

The windshield frame has areas of minor surface rust in the lower corners.
Engine, Fuel, Ignition, Exhaust and Cooling System
Fully de-smogged 1500cc SOHC carbureted engine with Bosch electronic ignition and 5-Spd manual transmission.
Note: This car will not pass emissions testing requirements in states or municipalities that require such inspections.
A 34 DMTR electric choke carburetor with sport air filter was fitted and properly jetted. Engine bay cooling blower was retained with an alternate thermo-switch to activate it.

New electric pump, filter, and fuel hoses.
The engine bay is clean with original, uncut wiring.

Sport exhaust with 4-1 long tube header and Bayless Borla stainless steel sport muffler. Sounds great with no drone at freeway speeds.

The cooling system has been serviced with new hoses and thermostat. System offers rock-solid temperatures. Stainless expansion tank.
Cooling fan works correctly. Radiator fins are rust free. Under car pipes are solid. Heater and blower work great.
This car is not equipped with air conditioning. This simplifies the engine bay significantly, and drops over 50lbs of curb weight from the vehicle.
AC cannot easily be retrofit to the car, without a significant number of changes in the engine bay, electrical, cooling, and cabin controls.

Electricals
System has good voltages, even with wipers, lights and heater fan on. All accessories and lights work. Replacement self-regulated alternator. Instrument cluster lens is crystal clear.
New distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires.
Headlights have been replaced with L.E.D. H4-style bulbs for exceptional brightness and low current consumption.
Battery positive terminal and ground straps have been cleanly replaced.
Transmission / Clutch / Driveline
The 5-Spd manual transmission is in excellent condition, shifting correctly into all gears with no synchronizer issues, no grinding, reverse works as expected. Shifter linkage serviced.

All new clutch hydraulics including master cylinder, slave cylinder and fluid hoses.
New clutch pack (Cover / Disc / Release Bearing)
Axle boots and CVs are good.

Steering / Suspension / Tires / Wheels / Brakes
KYB struts front and rear with new upper rubber strut mounts.
Control arm bushings and ball joints are in good condition with no issues. All wheel bearings are solid with no hum or play.
Braking system has been completely serviced with new master cylinder, brake pads, flex hoses and rotors.

Front springs have been shortened approx 3/4" to eliminate the stock "nose-high" attitude. The car sits level and looks normal.

All steering items check out. The car tracks straight and handles nicely on the freeway and through curves.
New Old Stock CMS 14" wheels, with correct 4x98 bolt pattern and new 165/60-14 tires.

Factory spare tire and wheel in excellent condition.

Interior / Top
This car has a black on black interior, which was somewhat rare for the early Series 2 cars. Original black loop carpet that is lightly sun faded but generally good condition with minimal wear.

Dashboard, door cards, center console and firewall claddings are factory issue black. Dashboard is uncracked!

Seats are recently re-upholstered and in excellent condition, with good bolsters and comfortable padding. Adjusters work smoothly.

Original 1979 pattern door cards are in very good condition. Doors have manual lifts and work correctly.

Targa top is black fiberglass with good color, and no headliner, making it light and easy to manage. New side weatherstrips and good condition OEM door seals.
Front / Rear Trunk
A late style front trunk carpet has been fitted. The battery cover intact. Brake fluid reservoir is excellent and uncracked.

Rear trunk is presentable with original style mat and carpet.

Repaired lower trunk pockets. Factory trunk jack and tool kit included.
